He wanted to say ‘I love you’

But kept it to good mornings and good nights

For love meant falling and she was afraid of heights

She wanted to say ‘I miss you’

But kept it to ‘how have you been’ and ‘have you had fun’

For missing him, meant his absence and she never wanted him gone

He would say his words silently and she would whisper them along
